THE HALTWhere the stories begin

BEGIN WITH THE STORY

The Lost Journals
of the Signalman.

Before you explore, discover the story behind the Halt: a Signalman, his lost journals, and a world waiting to be found again.

A welcome from the Signalman

Before you look around, a word from the man who kept the lamp.

A first journey into Brackenlowe · A preview of the storyworld in development.
Read a short introduction

At a quiet Victorian railway halt, the Signalman begins by recording trains, weather and repairs. Gradually, he finds other things worth keeping: the people passing through, the woodland animals and small moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Those observations grow into journals of their own. When the railway closes and the Halt slips from memory, the journals are kept safe, then stored away and forgotten. Their rediscovery opens the door to Brackenlowe and its stories.

WELCOME TO BRACKENLOWE HALT

A storyworld to read,
listen to and explore.

A quiet Victorian railway halt. A woodland full of familiar faces. Connected stories about small discoveries, friendship and finding your own courage.

The coming Brackenlowe Storyworld will open the door to an immersive world of stories, places and discoveries: a place to enter and explore, with stories, activities, audiobooks and videos waiting to be discovered.

Alongside the woodland tales, the Signalman’s reminiscences will bring Hull and East Yorkshire’s history to life through journal entries, painting a vivid picture of Hull’s growth during the nineteenth century and the lives woven into it.

With new stories and more to discover as the world grows, each return will offer another path to follow. Step away from the noise of modern life and into Brackenlowe’s gentler rhythm: a place inspired by a time when life moved more slowly, where there is room to linger, listen and let a story unfold.

While the Brackenlowe Storyworld takes shape, share a little of Pip’s story below.

A STORY PREVIEW

Pip and the
Wobbly Bridge

Pip and his friend Saffron have reached Mossy Bridge. Pip has noticed something that needs saying.

Watch and listen to the full story

Settle in for Pip and the Wobbly Bridge, with illustrations and full narration. 8 minutes 37 seconds.

Pip looked down at the ground beside the bridge.
Damp, but firm.
Good ground.
Honest ground.

He pressed both front paws into it.
In went one slow breath.
Out went the hurry.

Then Pip lifted his head.
“I think there is a wobble,” he said.

Saffron looked down at the bridge.
“A wobble?”

Pip nodded. “That board, near the middle. I think it moves a little.”

Saffron stepped back. Gently. Just enough to look properly.
“Oh,” she said. “I didn’t see it.”

“It is only small,” said Pip.
“Small things still count,” said Saffron.

About the coming Brackenlowe Storyworld
THE HULL HERITAGE ROOM

A REAL CITY, AN IMAGINED WORLD

A little Halt.
A deep connection
to Hull.

Hull’s docks, ships, railways and everyday lives give Brackenlowe its roots. The stories carry an affection for the city and the people who shaped it.

The Hull Heritage Room brings that inspiration into the storyworld, alongside the woodland tales and the life of the station.

The Halt and its storyworld are fictional. Their affection for Hull is real.

III · THE LOST JOURNALS OF THE SIGNALMAN

The station the timetables forgot.

The journals connect every corner of Brackenlowe: the station and its passengers, the woods and their familiar faces, the small moments that become stories.

At their heart is the Signalman’s hope for the children who might one day hear them.

“I only want the stories to do what they were born to do: to sit beside a child in the long waiting.”
